Another Aerial View

Here’s a picture I found online, just looking at Patrick Henry Village from another angle.  I believe that building at the far right is the commissary, but when I lived there in the late 70s/early 80s you had to drive into town for that.  The two buildings in the foreground, each with a central courtyard, didn’t exist back then.  It was just a big open field where people would fly kites.  In between those and the commissary is the middle school.

Click on the picture to go to the original site where I found it.  That version is a bit bigger and easier to make out details.

Hello — my name is Steve Forrett — you can reach me at stefor52@gmail.com — I am the oldest child of a family of eight Army brats who lived in Patrick Henry Village while my dad was stationed there during the Berlin Wall Crisis.

Your pictures of the 1960’s PHV were in the area my brothers and sisters and I called the “green buildings.” We were there from 1959 – 1962. Two of my brothers were born there. My dad, who is now in his late 80’s was stationed there as a first lieutenant. My parents were young then. My dad drove a 55 Ford station wagon, which he sold to buy a 1961 Volkswagen Camper.

I have VIVID memories of our apartment — the delicatessen — the 15-cent movie theater — the church — the playgrounds with the merry-go-round that I used to push — the little German man with the horse and cart who would offer rides around PHV for 50 pfennig or 15 cents (big difference in value compared to today). A mark was actually worth a quarter then. I have so much to tell you it isn’t funny. Yes — we would go all the way up, almost to the maid’s quarters on that granite-floored stairwell, and spit to the plaster-walled basement below. I totally forgot about that until I read what you wrote.

Much more to tell. Contact me.
